SWHS Principal's weekly updates and reminders for October 29th

Congratulations to the Women's Tennis and Volleyball programs for a successful year, making it to the 2nd round of the state playoffs. Great job to the coaches, players and all involved in contributing to a successful year!

Great job to all the Arts teachers as we are in the middle of our fall programs. Keep up the great work!!
New Online Resource for ACT Examinees
ACT Academy
ACT Academy is a free online learning tool and test practice program designed to help students get the best score possible on the ACT test, and well on your way to college and career success.  Through video lessons, interactive practice questions, full-length practice tests, educational games, and other materials targeted to students’ academic needs, ACT Academy provides a personalized study plan based on your previous scores from the ACT, PreACT, Official ACT practice tests, or in platform diagnostics.

Students can enter their PreACT scores today to get a personalized study plan: www.act.org/academy.                                                      
Seniors in English the first semester at SWHS will give speeches during the evening of November 15th. We need adult volunteers from the community and the "ranch" to judge. If you are interested, we would need you from 5:30-8:30 during the evening of November 15th. A meal is provided and we train you using a rubric to give feedback to the students. e-mail Mrs. Davis if you are interested at davisd9@gcsnc.com

Make-Up Picture Day:  Wednesday, October 31, 2018

NHS Induction ceremony is scheduled for October 29th from 5:30 to 7:00 in the Coggins gym. Please reach out to Mrs. Spillman if your child has not provided any specifics.

October is NC Countdown to College Month! Please reach out to your child's counselors with any questions related to the college application process and be sure you are receiving their remind text messages. Th
ese codes can be found
on the counselor's tab on the SWHS website.

An upcoming blood drive will be held tomorrow, Monday, October 29th from 8:30 am-1:30 pm. Parents and staff do not need an appointment. All students must have an appointment and have parent permission.  The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will be here in the old gym for donations. 

November 3rd from 8AM to Noon is a Saturday School for students who need to make up time. Please remind your students of this opportunity and the expectations while attending Saturday School (no food or drinks, no electronic devices, etc)

Relay for Life is this coming Saturday, November 3rd from 5-10PM.  Please reach out to Coach Black at blackj@gcsnc.com for more information.

SWHS Principal's updates for October 22


Good evening Southwest!

I hope you and your family have had a wonderful week. I want to express my personal thanks for everything the PTSA does to support our staff and students, such as the character spotlight breakfast and the staff appreciation baked potato luncheon held this past week. If you have interest in assisting in these types of events, please reach out to our PTSA. A link can be found on the school's website to guide you in the right direction.

As interims were distributed this past week, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers if you have questions, concerns even needing resources to assist your child at home.

Students eligible to attend are sophomores who are gifted in the performing arts and juniors who are gifted in the performing arts and core academics such as English, mathematics, natural science, social science, and world languages.If interested, please contact Ms. Graves. Applications are due back to Ms. Graves by tomorrow, October 22nd.

Activity buses on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons have started. Students who need transportation after school from tutorial must be present in their location from 3:45 to 4:45. Students should check with their teacher to be sure they will be present for their desired tutorial.

SWHS Principal's weekly updates for the week of October 15


Good evening Southwest!

I hope you and your family and friends are safe from this past week's storms. SWHS finally had power restored as of late today. With the cancelled days that have occurred come a lot of changes in activities as well as a lot of new dates and times for various events still to occur. Thank you for understanding. 

Since we lost out of the students' most anticipated theme day of "Growing up" this past Thursday, it has been rescheduled to tomorrow.

This past Friday's original plan of cowboy/cowgirl theme will be rescheduled to the Friday  game vs Smith High School on November 9th.


Picture make up day will be rescheduled as soon as we can get a date set by Lifetouch pictures.

Interim's were set to be distributed this past Thursday. We will now distribute the 2nd set of interims for the first quarter Tuesday. Please make sure you are monitoring your child';s grade on parent assist. If you need assistance in getting an account, please reach out to our data manager, Kristy Cline.
NC Governor's School is a summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students. Students eligible to attend are sophomores who are gifted in the performing arts and juniors who are gifted in the performing arts and core academics such as English, mathematics, natural science, social science, and world languages.If interested, please contact Ms. Graves. Applications are due back to Ms. Graves by October 22nd.

This Saturday is our first Saturday school for making up time. 8AM to Noon in the Media Center. Students who can not follow expectations during Saturday School will not be allowed to stay. This coming Tuesday is a presentation on Governor's School from 5:30-7:00 in the auditorium. NC Governor's School is a summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students. Students eligible to attend are sophomores who are gifted in the performing arts and juniors who are gifted in the performing arts and core academics such as English, mathematics, natural science, social science, and world languages.If interested, please contact Ms. Graves. Applications are due back to Ms. Graves by October 15th. 

This Wednesday, October 10th, is PSAT day for all Sophomores and Juniors. All of these students will take the PSAT right after the day begins. If any of our students have classes at GTCC, they should notify their professors that they will miss their class due to this test. Freshmen and seniors will report to their homerooms and seniors will have a senior meeting followed by an activity to give back to the SWHS community through service.  


This Thursday is the 2nd interim report distribution for the quarter. Please make sure you are monitoring your child';s grade on parent assist,. If you need assistance in getting an account, please reach out to our data manager, Kristy Cline.


As a reminder, due to the day offs from Hurricane Florence, we will now be in school on November 1st and January 18th. Please mark your calendars.

This Friday is PTSA Chic Fila Day in the palladium. Stop by for breakfast, lunch or dinner and mention Southwest High School so a portion of the profits come right back to our very own PTSA.
