SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for the July 20th...

Good evening Southwest,

This past week, Superintendent Contreras presented 3 models for reopening as well as the first 5 weeks to start on virtual for all grades.

Those models are embedded in the blog which can be found on any of our social media sites as well as on our website under Principal's Weekly Message

The Virtual School Academy application window for High School students is open from July 14-August 1. This is different from the Career College Promise Program and is offered for grades 9-12. Click Here

One push you may have heard is for students to take dual enrollment classes at GTCC. Southwest has the highest enrollment of all large high schools  as we have seen the positive benefits from this program. If you are unfamiliar with this program, students are able to earn AP weighted credit, no AP exams, and the best part is that it is free (except for a small student fee). Students are able to transfer free college credit into most colleges/universities in North Carolina and some outside of North Carolina if student earns a C or higher in the course.

 The criteria is as followed:
  • You must be a 11th or 12th grader in order to register, (or rising 11th grader in the Spring).
  • Minimum GPA is unweighted 2.8 (no rounding)
  • Extended deadline is August 6th
  • Fill out appropriate forms.
  • Submit a transcript
  • Contact Ms. Linda Whitow for any information - 336.334.4822/lswhitlow@gtcc.edu OR Ms. Annette Harper at amharper2@gtcc.edu
The forms are also linked within this blog.

Please reach out to your student's counselor if you have any questions:
10th-12th grade Last Name
A-D - Ms. Graves  gravesg3@gcsnc.com
E-L - Ms. Campbell  campbes2@gcsnc.com
M-R - Ms. Graham  grahamk2@gcsnc.com
S-Z - Mrs. Hudgens  hudgenj@gcsnc.com

In light of the recent decision by the tNCHSAA to delay the start of fall sports until at least Sept. 1, GCS will delay the start of marching band and athletics until at least Monday, August 3. We remain committed to our students and understand many are eager to resume participation in these programs. We will continue to monitor trends in our state and region regarding the spread of COVID-19 and will only allow activities to resume when it is safe to do so.

Check Social Media outlets for update:

As I finish my blog, I ask the community again to assist all Southwest Schools with monitoring the grounds. Since our most recent Social Media posts asking for assistance, we have had a soccer net cut up and the spirit rock defaced with inappropriate graffiti. We still ask for the community to keep their eyes out and report anything or anyone to the schools. Thank you for your assistance.

Please continue to stay in the loop with all communications. Please remember that with this pandemic and the unknown, staying in the loop of all communications is very important. I recommend you connect to all GCS and Southwest Guilford High School communications. Thank you again, I miss you all and I look forward to seeing you hopefully in the near future.

We are ... Southwest!
