SWGHS Principal's weekly message for October 12

Good evening Southwest!

I hope this message finds everyone doing well!

Congratulations are in order...

ALWAYS... THE BEST ARE AT SOUTHWEST!

We now have one week until the 1st quarter ends. The teachers have been contacting parents with any students who have Ds or Fs over the next two weeks and the administration will send a connect-ed to those in their grade levels who are standing at Fs at this time. Please make sure you are using the PowerSchool Parent Portal on a weekly basis so you are not blindsided with anything related to your student's attendance and/or academics.  Please click here if you need guidance in setting up a Parent Portal account. if you have any difficultly with this process, please e-mail Mrs. Kristy Cline at clinek2@gcsnc.com. As a parent myself, I have an automated e-mail that comes to me every Monday that alerts me of their progress. It's a wonderful opportunity for parents to be involved with their student's progress. As it relates to NC Virtual, GTCC and APEX classes, you will need your student to show you how they are progressing through their accounts when taking classes on those platforms.  If you have any questions regarding grades or attendance, please do not hesitate to reach out to your student's teachers via their e-mail address that can be found on the school's website.

This video has been used district wide to provide information regarding pairing student and parent accounts in Canvas so parents can access what is due, what has been submitted, graded, etc. You’ll see in the video that one of the key pieces is a pairing code that can only originate from the student account holder.

For the safety of our students & staff:

Any visitors on campus for any reason or anyone needing to check out a student must bring their driver’s license to be scanned each time you come on campus. Thank you for understanding this new expectation moving forward.

As you are aware, the GCS School Board voted for High School students to return on January 20th. At this moment, Southwest Guilford High School's bell schedule will be from 9:55 to 4:25. Please make sure your student is communicating with any activities or employments that may interfere with this schedule so they can make the proper adjustments. More details will be communicated as we start prep

Battle of the Books is getting ready to take off! Guilford County Schools has had a wonderful history of engaging high schoolers in reading and community. If you are interested in Southwest’s Battle of the Books club, please email Mrs. Hunt at huntv@gcsnc.com. There will be opportunities through Canvas and Teams for club meetings while maintaining safe procedures.

Seniors, don’t forget that senior superlatives and senior quotes are due no later than Friday, November 6th. Any late quotes and votes will not be accepted! Senior Superlative voting is now open! You can find the link on our Instagram and Facebook page @southwestghsyearbook. Also, seniors don’t forget to send in your senior quotes! Email your quotes to the Yearbook staff at horizons.swghs@gmail.com.

Remember that tasteless and vulgar quotes will not be published! Senior parents, if the school has your email address you should have received an email regarding other senior information. For more information about this school year’s yearbook follow us on Facebook or Instagram @southwestghsyearbook.

If a student says they can not do their work, I have guided teachers to use a flowchart that will allow every student to get their work during this time until all devices arrive... Feel free to review this flowchart. Did you know we are delivering work to homes?  Yes we are, just ask your teacher!

We know that wearing a cloth face covering is one of the best tools we have for reducing the spread of COVID-19. When schools reopen across NC, face coverings will be required for all K – 12th grade students, teachers, staff and adult visitors unless the person (or family member, for a student) states that an exception applies, such as if the person is eating, drinking, or strenuously exercising. Face coverings must be worn by K-12 students, and all teachers, staff, and adult visitors inside school buildings, and anywhere on school grounds, including outside. They are also required while traveling on buses or other school transportation vehicles. Cloth face coverings are required when anyone is in-person in public schools in Plan A or Plan B.

Southwest family, my Nursing Fundamental students will be sponsoring the fall blood drive again this year on Oct. 29 from 8:15-1:30. Due to Covid-19, it will be held at the Covenant Church United Methodist on Skeet Club Rd. Please come out and help us meet our donation goal and invite others to come. All the information for the blood drive is located on our Southwest home page. There is also a parent consent form for students that are 16 yrs. old. Students must be at least 16 yrs. old and weight at least 110 lbs. Donors must bring ID or One Card to the appointment. Appointments can be made online and this link is on our home page and I have also attached it here. Let me know if you have questions. Please share this information with your classes. Thanks.
