SWHS Principal's Weekly Updates for January 8th

Good evening, this is Mike Hettenbach, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School with your weekly updates and reminders...

I hope each and everyone of you are staying as warm as possible as the temperatures continue to stay low.

We now have 6 instructional days left while two of those days may have teacher made final exams being given. Exam exemptions will be distributed Tuesday, January 9th in the cafeteria during all lunches for 10th, 11th and 12th graders while 9th graders will have theirs distributed in the Freshman Academy gym in the morning. In order to earn an exemption card, the student must be in attendance 97% for the entire semester and without any unexcused absences.  Any unexcused absences, or absences accrued during these next 8 days that put a student in the ineligible status will be required to return to campus to take their exam.

Due to the canceled school day on 1/4, the end of semester Final Exam Testing schedule  has been moved by one day. The revised schedule for teacher made exams will be Friday, January 12th for blocks 1 and 3, and Tuesday, January 16th for blocks 2 and 4. These two days are regular school days. Exempting the exams on these two days do not excuse any student from school on these days, however, students do not have to attend school the following 5 days in which their class would have been scheduled. The state exam schedule, Wednesday, January 17th to Monday, January 22nd will test blocks 1-4 for all state exams. January 23rd is a make up exam day and January 24th is the first day for the 2nd semester. These 4 state exam days will end at 1:05 for dismissal. Students should be in dress code for all exams and will not be allowed to take their exam if out of dress code. Please reach out to your child's teachers if you have more questions related to the exams.

This coming Friday is PTSA Chic Fila Day - please support the SWHS PTSA by eating at Chic Fila during Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner. Just let them know you are supporting the SWHS PTSA. If your child goes to ChicFila on the way to school, have them tell the cashier they are from SWHS.

Freshman Focus parents, there will be a "be active" hoops/jump rope for heart day in our freshman focus classes. This Tuesday, January 9th, we are asking all Freshman Focus students to make a $2 dollar donation to participate in the event. All additional donations are certainly welcome and appreciated.

ATTENTION SENIORS:

The yearbook has enough space for about 15 more senior ads. If you still want to purchase one, the deadline to have in all money, pictures, and text is Friday, January 12th. Email all information to brattoj@gcsnc.com. The price for a full page ad is $340, a half page is $185, and a quarter page is $90. Don’t miss out on the memories of a senior ad!!

A college prep and athletic ambition event will be held next Saturday at 9AM in the SWHS auditorium. This is a do not miss event. ALL students are encouraged to attend.  The first session is a panel of former SW students who will share their experiences in college. The goal is for prospective college students to make even more of their high school experience, based on the successes and challenges of the panel. The second session is relevant for all athletes aspiring to play at the collegiate level.  All staff and parents are invited to attend. Feel free to call Coach Rainey at the school if you have any questions.

The men’s and women’s varsity basketball teams are sponsoring Hoops for Hunger for the remainder of the basketball season.  We ask that you bring non-perishable food items to the remaining home basketball games.  Green bins will be available in the gym lobby for you to deposit your donations. All of the items donated will go to support families in need within the Southwest Schools. Hunger is not just an issue around the holidays.  Hunger is an issue every day of the year. These donations are not in lieu of the regular price of admission. We have home games against North Forsyth on Tuesday so come on out and support the basketball program as well as the Hoops for Hunger program!

Principal's weekly updates for the Holiday break

Good evening, this is Mike Hettenbach, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School with your weekly updates and reminders...

A big thank you to the entire community, students, staff and parents for providing us with the support needed during this past week. I have had a tremendous amount of conversations with many of you over these past few days, particularly about poor decision making amongst our teenagers. While we can all agree that young people may make poor decisions, I think we can all agree that we can assist with minimizing those decisions, especially decisions surrounding drugs and alcohol. We must start taking as many steps as possible to be completely sure we are doing everything we can to teach, monitor and intervene when it comes to these young people. Please assist us in this process. We have lost too many young people and this must stop immediately.

Please remind each other that we return to school from break on Wednesday January 3rd.

Parents and students, we now have 8 full instructional days left while two of these days may have teacher made final exams being issued. As you can see, we are a blink of an eye away from being complete. Interim reports were distributed this past Monday, December 18th. Please contact your child's teachers if you did not receive them. Please make sure your child's grades are kept up, excessive attendance issues are corrected, time made up, and positive choices maintained.  If you need assistance with grade monitoring through the parent assistance program, please contact Kristy Cline through e-mail at clinek2@gcsnc.com. Good evening, this is Mike Hettenbach, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School with your weekly updates and reminders...

We now have 9 full instructional days left before the first day of exams start. Please make sure your child's grades are kept up, excessive attendance issues are corrected, time made up, and positive choices maintained.  If you need assistance with grade monitoring through the parent assistance program, please contact Kristy Cline through e-mail at clinek2@gcsnc.com.

Parents, we need your help, as we try to enforce safety procedures at SWHS, we ask that you work with us on the check out procedures. Also - when you enter our building, it is imperative you check in with either the front office or the attendance office. Do not walk straight into any classroom, cafeteria, etc without checking in with the school first. If you have others picking up your child, please notify us as well, and please share our expectations with them as well. Thank you for working with us on this.

Freshman Focus parents, we are having a "be active" hoops/jump rope for heart day in our freshman focus classes.  On January 9th, we are asking all Freshman Focus students to make a $2 dollar donation to participate in the event. All additional donations are certainly welcome and appreciated.

The men’s and women’s varsity basketball teams are sponsoring Hoops for Hunger for the remainder of the basketball season.  We ask that you bring non-perishable food items to the remaining home basketball games.  Green bins will be available in the gym lobby for
you to deposit your donations. All of the items donated will go to support families in need within the Southwest Schools. Hunger is not just an issue around the holidays.  Hunger is an issue every day of the year. These donations are not in lieu of the regular price of admission. We have home basketball games this week so come on out and support the basketball program as well as the Hoops for Hunger program!

LET’S DUNK HUNGER TOGETHER!!

As it relates to the weekly athletics, please feel free to navigate to the www.cowboysports.org website for detailed information.
