Parent assist attendance and grade monitoring will be up and running on this coming Tuesday, September 10th, the 11th day of school. SWGHS Principal's weekly message for September 3rd

Hello Southwest High School!

What a GREAT week!  While transportation continues to improve, I can not ask for a better first week that what we have experienced . Thank you to all who have been involved in making week 1 so amazing.
This weekend is Labor Day weekend. Therefore, we do not have school on Monday. Please take this extended weekend to enjoy company with those you love. Please be prepared to return to school on Tuesday morning.

As a gentle reminder, parents should never be dropping off their students in the student lot in the morning. With buses and novice teenager drivers using this lot, parents should drop off their students in the front of the school. Additionally, stopping in the middle of Barrow road to drop off a student is extremely unsafe practices.

All students who are using our parking lot should have filled out an application and brought the correct information and money in to Mrs. Barnum for a permit. We have given the students up until Tuesday afternoon to take care of this responsibility.

GTCC students' transportation - Bus 92 is the bus that transports Tuesday and Thursday. 1124 transports MWF. Request for transportation should have been communicated to the counselling office. If transportation is no longer needed, it must be communicated to the counselor as well.

Parent assist attendance and grade monitoring will be up and running on 9/10 the 11th day of school. The reason for this delay, is to ensure we have all schedule changes in the system. Please reach out to your child's teachers if you have any inquiries about their grades.
To register for an account go to Powerschool under the Parent tab on SWHS website site.
If you had an account, try your old password first,  if it doesn’t work click on “forgot my password”. If all fails and you need assistance, email clinek2@gcsnc.com
As a reminder, all students should have already started their summer reading. Students will be tested in the first couple weeks of school. If a student has English in their 2nd semester, they can still get their test out of the way during the beginning of the first semester. All he/she needs to do is to reach out to their 2nd semester teacher. Summer reading lists for all grade levels can be found under the students tab on the SWHS website. https://www.gcsnc.com/southwest_guilford_high

A heads up for AP students, it is never too early to start accessing the materials to be better prepared for your AP classes. AP students need to ask their AP teachers to share a join code to access AP classroom resources.
Parents and students have asked about the OneCard processs. We will not be starting this process until I feel we have the pieces in pace to run this more effectively. We will keep you abreast of this process.

Please review the student handbook with your student. This can be found on the SWGHS website and we also distributed the hard copy to each student on this coming Monday.  Please pay extra attention to items such as no lunches being delivered by vendors, the process for lunches being dropped off by adults only, the electronics policy, dress code, and more.

Seniors should start to work on college applications.

FAFSA opens up Oct. 1 so start to begin the application with parents (https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa), go to www.cfnc.org for one stop shop for scholarships searches, apply for college, study for tests, send transcripts, and much more.

SWGHS Principal's weekly updates and reminders for August 26th

Good evening Southwest High School!  Let the games begin!
I hope this communication finds you ready to go for Monday morning with the new start time of 8:10.  We start at 8:10 and end at 3:15. Homerooms will be posted on the walls in the freshman gym for 9th graders and in the main halls for upperclassmen. Students must attend those locations to receive their most updated schedules. These schedules could have changed for a variety of reasons. Now, in homeroom, your student will receive multiple items and a lot of information during the first 3 days. Starting tomorrow, any students arriving before 8:10 should either report to the freshmen gym if they are 9th graders or wait in the front atrium if they are upperclassmen. Obviously, there are exceptions to this such as being in Jazz Band zero block, meeting with teachers for tutorials, clubs, etc. Please understand that our staff do not start their day until 7:55 the latest. Students will then be allowed to move to the main hallway at 7:40. Thank you for understanding this additional measure we put in place for the safety of all individuals who arrive to our campus. Additionally, please remember that all doors are locked throughout the day. If you are needing to enter the campus, you will be required to buzz in, have identification ready and state your purpose for entering our building. All visitors must still check in with either attendance or the main office. Thank you again for understanding the importance of this process.

New bell schedule (first three days, homeroom runs from 8:10-8:30)
Students arriving before 7:40 should wait in the:
Freshmen – Freshmen gym
Upper classmen – front atrium
(Note: this is a safety reason)
At 7:40, a bell will ring and allow students to swipe in to the one card pass system

Students are released to 1st block class  8:05
             1st Block           8:10 to 9:50
             2nd Block         9:55 to 11:25
             3rd Block         11:30 to 1:35

             1st lunch          11:30 to 11:55
12:00 sweep bell for 9th graders
             2nd lunch          12:03 to 12:28
             3rd lunch          12:36 to 1:01
             4th lunch          1:10 to 1:35

              4th Block         1:40 to 3:15

3:30 – Halls should be clear of ALL students
4:30 – dismissal from tutorials to get on after school buses on Tuesdays and Thursdays (once tutorials needing transportation starts).

Weaver students will begin on Day 2.  AM Weaver students should report to homeroom followed by the media center, PM Weaver students should report to the media center for 3rd block. On Tuesday, Weaver students will not be required to go to homeroom and will go to the front foyer to await Weaver transportation where they will be picked up around 8:25. They will return to campus around 12:15. PM Weaver students will be picked up from SW between 11:30-11:45 in front of the school.  Any Weaver students on campus day 1 are NOT allowed to roam the halls or hangout anywhere other than the Media Center. They should remain at SWHS in the media center on Day 1 for attendance purposes.
GTCC CCP students will start on Monday and if needing transportation should have been communicated to by their counselor and will be picked up in front of the school at the designated time from bus 1124. GTCC students will start on Monday!

In regards to traditional transportation and the Exceptional Children Department transportation (except 2), they will be dropping off in the student parking lot. wit that being said, it is vital that all parents drop off their students in the front of the school. You will not be allowed to enter the student parking lot to drop off your student. Additionally, there have been some very unsafe practices over the years specifically watching parents stop in the middle of Barrow Road to drop off their student. Please do not do this. Drive to the front of the school and drop off your student so we can assure best safe practices. Students will get on their respective buses in the front of the school after the day ends.

If you are needing transportation AM or PM stops, please visit the GCS transportation website and look up the bus stop locator. This will guide you to the morning and afternoon stops and times. Please be patient in the first week as delays are common in the beginning of the school year.

Starting Tuesday, September 3rd, all grade levels will be back in dress code.
Dress code (you can click on this link to the left) - please check the dress code on the Southwest Guilford High School website for very minor adjustments.
Parent assist attendance and grade monitoring will be up and running on 9/10 the 11th day of school. The reason for this delay, is to ensure we have all schedule changes in the system. Please reach out to your child's teachers if you have any inquiries about their grades.

Parking Permits can be obtained by filling out the appropriate form (found outside the front office), having license ready along with the $40 fee and providing this to Mrs. Barnum before school in the cafeteria.

With the sad state of funding from our county commissioners, I embarrassingly ask for the community to assist our teachers with any basic supplies such as dry erase markers, dry erases, dry erase board cleaners, tissues, hand sanitizer, sticky notes, pens, pencils, etc. Feel free to send these supplies in with your student any day during the year. This will help us dramatically.
