Southwest,
30 full instructional days left! As previously communicated, once we hit the 4th quarter, time will fly by quickly. Please monitor your student's grades daily and reach out to their teachers with any questions or concerns. As we navigate through this last quarter, I want to emphasize some key pieces within this blog. Please pay close attention to the calendar with all the testing dates, AP testing, asynchronous days, etc. We have a few items related to seniors included, but not limited to, cap and gown supply pick up, student college decision spotlight opportunities, scholarship communications with counselors, assisting with the Adopt A Senior program, as well as assisting our amazing parent group who are working extremely hard behind the scenes on events that will assist in celebrating our seniors. There is information as well about parking permits, Monday's PTSA Membership meeting, the SW Golf Tournament, and the most recent press release about face to face students returning 5 days a week. Last, we have the 3rd quarter report card and the first 4th quarter interim report card being e-mailed home on Wednesday. More information can be found with specifics throughout this blog.
PRESS RELEASE
In-person Instruction to Increase for Middle and High School Students; Updates to Student Health Protocols Announced for All Schools
Greensboro, N.C. – More GCS students will learn in-person five days per week
starting on Monday, April 19.
The
change affects secondary school students with disabilities who receive special
education services through an individual education plan or 504 plan and English
language learners who are not currently learning in-person five days per week.
The
change also affects middle and high school students who currently attend school
on a hybrid schedule, with two days of in-person instruction and three days of
remote instruction each week.
“Our
goal has always been to educate the maximum number of students in person for
the greatest amount of time possible while keeping students and staff healthy
and safe,” said Superintendent Sharon L. Contreras.
Secondary
school students who are enrolled in a virtual school or who learn remotely
through their home schools will remain on that plan through the end of the
year. The district is not accepting new requests for in-person learning.
Starting April 19, students will either attend virtually or in-person five days
per week.
Currently,
more than 47,800 PreK-12 students in GCS are learning in person. Yesterday,
more than 400 elementary school students on wait lists for in-person learning
were able to attend school for the first time since schools closed last spring
due to the pandemic.
The
changes were made possible by new guidance from the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the North
Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS)
regarding physical or social distancing. With masking requirements in place,
the CDC and the NCDHHS now say that schools can place students 3 feet apart
when desks are facing in the same direction.
Protocols
requiring 6 feet of physical distance while waiting in lines and traveling
through hallways and corridors remain in force, as do efforts to limit student
and employee gatherings in meeting rooms and common spaces. Faculty, staff and
school board meetings will continue to be held virtually through the end of the
school year.
In
keeping with the March 24 update to state
public health protocols, GCS schools will stop requiring student
health attestations prior to boarding a school bus, entering a school or
classroom, or participating in athletics. Students temperatures will no longer
be taken prior to school entry. This change will also go into effect on April
19.
Parents/guardians
are encouraged to monitor their children’s symptoms and keep them home if they
are ill, have COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to someone who tests
positive for COVID-19 within the last 14 days. Students should remain home
until they are symptom and fever free for at least 24 hours without the aid of
fever-reducing medicine.
Mask
mandates and protocols regarding respiratory etiquette and hand hygiene will
remain in place for students, employees and other adults on school buses and
school/district campuses. The district continues to provide schools with three-
and four-ply masks for use by students and staff.
Daily
temperature checks and health screening attestations prior to building entry
will continue for employees and other adults through the end of the school
year. District schools and buildings remain closed to visitors and volunteers.
“We
want to thank our staff members, who have been so diligent in adhering to our
health and safety protocols and so resourceful in finding new ways to reach
students,” Contreras said. “The success of our elementary schools and the
smooth re-entry of our middle and high school students have given us the
confidence to move forward with this change, as we begin the long process of
helping students recover some of the learning losses we’ve seen this year.”
Starting
last fall, GCS was one of the first large school districts statewide and nationally
to bring PreK-5 students back to school five days per week for in-person
learning. GCS was also one of the first to offer in-person learning for PreK-12
students with disabilities served in self-contained classrooms or public
separate school settings as well as those who are homeless, living in
transitional housing or living in foster care settings.
With
more than 20,000 GCS students PreK-12 attending school in-person since November
of 2020, the district’s reopening plan has served as a state and national model
for other school systems. In February, the district’s reopening plan and
planning process garnered a “Best of the Best” Award from the North Carolina
School Public Relations Association.
Cap and Gown distribution to Thursday, April 29th from 3pm -6pm.
“Hi, my name is __________________ from ___________________ high school and I’m proud to
announce that I’ve been accepted to ________________________ University this fall.”
All Freshmen and Sophomores will be taking the second
assessment of the NWEA MAP test throughout April. First and Third block
teachers will schedule days based on natural breaks in their curriculum to
provide time for these assessments.
All sophomores will take the PreACT on Wednesday, April 14. Students can ask any of their teachers for the test room assignment from the test plan. They should bring two number 2 pencils (mechanical pencils are not allowed). Calculators will be provided for all students. Bus transportation will be available to all sophomores. Bus Routes will be available after spring break.
The ACT WorkKeys exam is given to all seniors who qualify as Career and Technical Education concentrators, meaning they are pursuing a pathway of courses in one of 13 career clusters. The assessment will be given during school hours on Wednesday, April 14. Letters with more information will be coming home with your senior or mailed out the week we return from Spring Break.
AP exam dates are fast approaching! Face to face exams will be May 3-7 and May 10-12, 14 and 17 (please note, no AP exams will be given on Thursday, May 13th). Remote students are encouraged to come in for face to face paper testing. If remote students cannot come in for face to face testing, they are given the option to test digitally at home. You may also contact your child’s counselor to let them know how students will be taking your AP exams this spring.
The SAT for juniors who took advantage of signing before the April 9 deadline will be administered on April 27th who completes the online registration before April 9. Grades 9,10, 12 and any juniors who did NOT sign p will have an asynchronous day of instruction.

Adopt a Senior
The staff and community members of Southwest Guilford High School want to celebrate YOU!
Your Senior year is one that many look forward to upon entering elementary school. It is also a year that no one never forgets. All of you have certainly made your mark in history with the most senior skip days of any other class……. EVER! So please allow us to help you celebrate by “adopting” you.
Here is how it works:
A Facebook Group has been created for you and your families called Adopt-A-2021-Senior. If you or someone in your family is on Facebook, please search for the group, answer the three questions and join. Staff and community members can either request a senior or be matched up with a senior if they do not know one graduating this year to “adopt” for celebrating. The staff and community member will deliver their celebration gifts to you between May 20th – June 3rd.
Please send any questions to swghcowboys@gmail.com
Stay tuned there are many other ways we have started planning to celebrate you from now until June 4th!
Please email Mrs. Whitestone, whitesl@gcsnc.com if you do NOT wish to participate.
This video has been used district wide to provide information regarding pairing student and parent accounts in Canvas so parents can access what is due, what has been submitted, graded, etc. You’ll see in the video that one of the key pieces is a pairing code that can only originate from the student account holder.
