SWHS Principal's weekly updates for September 3rd

Welcome back!

What a great first week!  I am one happy Principal! Our students were amazing, the staff were in full gear taking care of students, and parents were so patient with the first week of the magnetic door system. On top of that, finding out that the efforts of our staff, students, and community were recognized at the State of the Community for Greensboro as the Hubert Humphrey Improvement Funds Award winner for the first time ever is something we all should be proud of. Multiple links can be found embedded in this blog for your viewing pleasure.

A reminder that tomorrow, Monday, is Labor Day. No School for staff and students.

Parents and guardians, I need your assistance on two specific items.

First, we are in dire need of a couple PTSA board members. I can assure you the work is minimal but very much needed. Please reach out to me if you have any interest or know you of anyone that can help out. The second item I need help with is for each parent to have a conversation with their children in regards to visiting other school campuses and defacing school property. Most recently, we had students from another school visit our campus and deface our school property. Myself nor that visiting school's principal condones this behavior. I am seeking assistance from our parents to communicate with our our students that it is not wise to take a chance for any reason by visiting any opposing school property for these purposes, even if it is meant to be harmless. Additionally, if we are ever vandalized by another school moving forward, I ask our community and our students to refrain from any form of retaliation, whether it be through social media, verbally, physically, etc.I appreciate ahead of time the conversations you can have with your children in order to keep them from dealing with unnecessary consequences.

Dress code is now in full effect starting tomorrow. Please take a moment to review the expectations for dress attire.

As a reminder, student pick up and drop off should always be in the front of the school. For safety reasons, the back lot by the gym should be kept to teacher and student movement and parking during the day. Please understand that our students are still considered novice drivers and we need to provide a safer parking lot for our students to drive in and out of. Athlete pick up and drop off can resume in the athletics parking lot.

Parent assist attendance and grade monitoring will be up and running on 9/11 the 11th day of school. The reason for this delay, is to ensure we have all schedule changes in the system. Please reach out to your child's teachers if you have any inquiries about their grades.
To register for an account go to Powerschool under the Parent tab on SWHS website site.
If you had an account, try your old password first,  if it doesn’t work click on “forgot my password”. If all fails and you need assistance, email clinek2@gcsnc.com

To add to our great start, the students have been wonderful by respecting our needs for increasing safety protocols at SWHS.  As a reminder, any students arriving before 8:10 should either report to the freshmen gym if they are 9th graders or wait in the front atrium if they are upperclassmen. Obviously there are exceptions to this such as being in Jazz Band zero block, meeting with teachers for tutorials, clubs, etc. Please understand that our staff do not start their day until 8:15.

In regards to Safety and security, we are waiting on our 2nd magentic door lock to be installed. I am anticipating this install to occur soon.  We are also expecting the pilot program for the student identification card system, a visitor monitoring system as well as a student locator on buses system coming our way. We will keep everyone updated with the progress of these programs. Thank you for working with these changes and understanding that these measures are being put in place to increase the level of safety and security at SWHS.

SWHS Principal's Weekly updates for August 27th

Welcome back!

Tomorrow is the first day back to school! All students should report to their homerooms. Homerooms will be posted in various locations. Freshmen should look for their homeroom on the walls of the Freshmen Gym. Upperclassmen should look down the main hallway. When the 8:35 bell rings, students will report to their homeroom where each student will receive their most updated schedule. As a reminder, with the ongoing fluctuation of enrollment, there are chances that schedules may have altered from just a few days ago and can still later all the way up to the 10th day of school. We appreciate your understanding as we work with these daily changes.

As a reminder, if you need more guidance with your schedule, feel free to contact the assigned counselor. Counseling responsibilities are now alphabetically assigned in grades 10-12.
9th grade will all have Ms. Compton
A-D  - Ms. Graves
E-L - Mr.  Hawkins
M-R - Mrs. Richards
S-Z - Mrs. Hudgens

All grade levels except for the senior class must be in complete dress code starting tomorrow. The dress code is found on the website if you need clarification. Seniors have spirit week. Seniors will be allowed to follow these themes... Monday, Hawaiian/Tie Dye, Tuesday, Senior Queen, Wednesday - Neon Pink shirt slogan with We're kind of a B19 Deal!", Thursday, Swat/Camouflage, Friday, SW Spirit shirt or class shirt (these can be homemade this week). 9th, 10th and 11th graders can wear homemade class shirts on Friday as well. Typically, homemade shirts are not allowed within the dress code expectations, however, we are making an exception this Friday. This Friday, we also have a PTSA Jean Day. If you have purchased one of the PTSA jean day bracelets OR signed up for PTSA as a student, you should have a jean band Bracelet and therefore can wear jeans on Friday as well. At no time, should jeans have rips, shreds, holes, etc. As we start the year, failure to work with our dress code will result in the requirement to change clothes, calling home, as well as possibly receiving other consequences.

If you are needing transportation AM or PM stops, please visit the GCS transportation website and look up the bus stop locator. This will guide you to the morning and afternoon stops and times. Please be patient in the first week as delays are common in the beginning of the school year.

If you are driving, please be mindful that traffic coming in and out of the school is much heavier than normal. If your child has the opportunity to ride the bus, we encourage you to take advantage of that to assist us with the flow of traffic. Student pick up and drop off should always be in the front of the school. For safety reasons, the back lot by the gym should be kept to teacher and student movement and parking during the day. Athlete pick up and drop off can resume in the athletics parking lot. Thank you for assisting us with this request.

Starting tomorrow, any students arriving before 8:10 should either report to the freshmen gym if they are 9th graders or wait in the front atrium if they are upperclassmen. Obviously there are exceptions to this such as being in Jazz Band zero block, meeting with teachers for tutorials, clubs, etc. Please understand that our staff do not start their day until 8:15. Thank you for understanding this additional measure we put in place for the safety of all individuals who arrive to our campus. Additionally, one of the magnetic doors will be activated starting tomorrow. All visitors must still check in with either attendance of the main office. Thank you again for understanding the importance of this process.

As a reminder, all students should have already started their summer reading. Students will be tested in the first couple weeks of school. If a student has English in their 2nd semester, they can still get their test out of the way during the beginning of the first semester. All he/she needs to do is to reach out to their 2nd semester teacher. Summer reading lists for all grade levels can be found under the students tab on the SWHS website. https://www.gcsnc.com/southwest_guilford_high

In regards to Safety and security, one of our two main entrances have now been installed with magnetic door locks with surveillance. We are anticipating the other install over the next month. We are also expecting a pilot program for a student identification card system as well as a visitor monitoring system. We will keep everyone updated as we receive these programs in place. Thank you for working with these changes and understanding that these measures are being put in place to increase the level of safety and security at SWHS.

This will also be an opportunity to sign up for the PTSA, order the jean day incentive bracelet, pay for the student parking lot pass, and more. It is important to become well versed with the student dress code before you go shopping for clothes. You can find that dress code on the SWHS website. Last, GCS recently increased the student parking lot passes to $30 for the year so we feel it is important you are aware of this information prior to the start of the school year. Part of this fee will return to the school for safety and security purchases. You will have the opportunity to pay for your child's parking pass at open house.

SWHS Principal's mid summer updates and reminders

Good evening, this is Mike Hettenbach, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School with some mid summer updates and reminders...

First and foremost, I hope that each and every one of you are enjoying your summer. With that being said, I would like to welcome the incoming freshmen, the class of 2022 and also congratulate while challenging the incoming senior class, the class of 2019, as we need your help in leading the way for a very positive and successful school year. For those of you new to my communications, once school starts you will receive a weekly phone message on Sunday evenings. This message will be posted on the school's website, posted to Facebook and Twitter and I am working to get future postings on Instagram as well. This will be a great way to review my messages and keep you connected to what's happening on the ranch.

Freshman Orientation is on August 23rd with only students reporting from 8:30Am -12:30 and parents reporting that evening from 6:30PM to 8:00. This orientation has proven to be extremely successful in providing a very successful transition for both the students and parents who attend this event.

We are a little over a month away from the start of the school year. The first day for all students is Monday, August 27th. All students should have already started their summer reading. Students will be tested in the first couple weeks of school. If a student has English in their 2nd semester, they can still get their test out of the way during the beginning of the first semester. Summer reading lists for all grade levels can be found under the students tab on the SWHS website. https://www.gcsnc.com/southwest_guilford_high

This summer, Guilford County Schools created a uniform Open House schedule for all Elementary, Middle and High schools. Open House for all High Schools, specifically SWHS,  will be August 20th from 5:30-7PM. This is an opportunity for students and/or parents to pick up schedules as well as walk the building and meet teachers. There will be a food truck on site which will provide a percentage of the proceeds back to the PTSA if you are interested in eating dinner this evening. This will also be an opportunity to sign up for the PTSA, order the jean day incentive bracelet, pay for the student parking lot pass, and more. It is important to become well versed with the student dress code before you go shopping for clothes. Last, GCS recently increased the student parking lot passes to $30 for the year so we feel it is important you are aware of this information prior to the start of the school year. You will have the opportunity to pay for your child's parking pass at open house.

As it relates to schedules for this coming school year, it has been informed to us that students are viewing schedules online. Please understand that these schedules are not finalized. Due to the daily fluctuation in enrollments, this causes us to alter classes, levels, and times of the day in which they are taught. This causes a ton of shifting in the scheduling matrix. As this is a daily process. we appreciate your understanding with this and we look forward to providing a more firm schedule come August 20th. At that time, if you need more guidance with your schedule, feel free to contact the assigned counselor. Counseling responsibilities are now alphabetically assigned in grades 10-12.
9th grade will all have Ms. Compton
A-D  - Ms. Graves
E-L - Mr.  Hawkins
M-R - Mrs. Richards
S-Z - Mrs. Hudgens

The following information comes from Mrs. Meier, our Media Specialist... Library will be open on Monday July 23, 10am-Noon for student check out and on August 8, 1-3.  Also, summer reading incentive – student can earn a ticket to Kersey Valley Spooky Woods or Maize Adventure just by reading and logging their time over the summer.  Students will also get extra credit on their summer reading assignments.  See the website for details!

In regards to Safety and security, one of our two main entrances have now been installed with magnetic door locks with surveillance. We are anticipating the other install before the school year starts. We are also expecting a pilot program for a student identification card system as well as a visitor monitoring system. We will keep everyone updated as we receive these programs in place. Thank you for working with these changes and understanding that these measures are being put in place to increase the level of safety and security at SWHS.

On the morning of July 23rd, the HP Police department will be using our Freshman Academy building for training. Please do not be alarmed if you see a couple of dozen Police vehicles on site.

As it relates to athletics,

The first official day of fall athletic practices start on Monday, July 30th.  Times and locations can be found on our athletic webpage at www.cowboysports.org .

We do not want anyone to have their exemption card revoked or find themselves having to make up any time due to any last minute poor choices in attending school so please assist us in making sure your child attends Monday and Tuesday.
Wednesday is the start of state exams. Wednesday is block 1 exam and the day ends at 1:05. Thursday is block 2, Friday is block 3, and the following Monday is block 4. All of these four state exam days end at 1:05. If your child has already taken an exam for this particular block, they are not expected to attend school that day. We will run buses at 3:35 as well for any students who have made arrangements with any of our teachers for tutoring or make up time. That should be discussed with the teacher prior to that day.

Good luck on finishing the semester strong!

Seniors, a reminder that you must be aware of the graduation calendar that is posted on the web and has been distributed to you multiple times already. Attending graduation practice is a must. Most universities and colleges, as well as employers, are extremely flexible if you are communicating ahead of time.

If you know of any students in the area who are looking to complete Boy Scout or Girl Scout projects and would like to complete them on the campus of Southwest, please have them touch base with either Mr. Hettenbach or Coach Christman. We have a wide variety of projects we are looking to be accomplished.
