SWHS Principal's weekly updates for April 15th

Good evening Southwest community!

This past week was Staff Appreciation week. Thank you for sharing all your kind words, letters, etc to the staff at Southwest Guilford High School. We are so lucky to work in such a caring school community. Thank you to the PTSA and all the help that was put into this past week. It certainly did not go unnoticed.

As a reminder, this past Tuesday, we distributed report cards to all students during homeroom. Please check with your child that they brought their report card home.

Students who are planning to attend a 4 year college or university should be aware of the enrollment deposit that is due by May 1.  This deposit lets the university know that you are planning to attend.  A housing deposit may be due at this time as well.  If you have questions please refer to your acceptance letter and reach out to the admissions office of the college that you plan to attend.

Virtual learning registration forms for summer and fall are available.  See your counselor for more information.

In order for your child's ALVS teachers to submit final grades by June 4th, 2019, GCS seniors will need to submit all teacher-scored assignments by midnight EST on May 26th.

Teacher-scored assignments include Practices, Journals, Projects, Teacher-Scored Tests (TSTs), Discussions (Honors only), and Explore (Honors only). Final exams and any remaining Quizzes must be completed by May 31st

All students who have received any scholarship dollars should report those figures to their counselor.

SWHS Principal's weekly updates for April 1

Good evening Southwest community!

The deadline for GTCC applications is fast approaching. Students should see their counselors for information regarding documents and make an appointment with Ms. Whitlow to register for classes. Applications are in the counseling office.

To the Class of 2020.  The College Board Opportunity Scholarships are a series of monthly drawing scholarships from $500 to $40,000 dollars for your graduation class.  Attached is a flyer with an embedded video and link for you to interact with and start earning entries for these national scholarships.  All students are eligible for these scholarships based only on completing from one to all six of the action steps that lead to college admissions.   Drawings have already begun so the sooner you complete these two steps, the sooner your entries will be added to the next drawing.

The first two steps are really easy.  They are to open a College Board Account and then register for the scholarship challenge via cb.org/opportunity

If you need assistance with these steps, please stop by your School Counselor’s office and they will help you.

We have a special program on March 26th, Tuesday, called VIP for a VIP.  The VIP for a VIP program will consist of a one hour presentation in the auditorium in the AM for all seniors and possibly juniors providing testimony and statistics directly related to teenage fatalities. In the afternoon, all juniors and seniors will assemble outside for a demonstration of a fatal car crash.
This program is dedicated to the students that have lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents while attending Southwest Guilford High School since it opened.  We sincerely believe that through an on-going teenage driver education program and strong parental support, teenage traffic fatalities can be eliminated in our community. We consider the students at Southwest Guilford High School VIP's. If any parent wishes for their child not to participate, please send a note in to the school directed to me.
Spring Blood Drive is this Tuesday, March 26 9 am- 2 pm. Students must have an appointment. Staff and family members that want to donate can walk in anytime before 1 pm to donate. Please email Mrs. Dusek with any questions.

SWHS Principal's Weekly Updates and Reminders for March 18th...

Good evening Southwest community!

Students have received registration books this past Tuesday morning via their first block class.  Students can use this resource to review course descriptions while they navigate through the course selection process on Powerschool.  Instructions regarding class registration were sent out via email and remind text messaging by your student’s counselor.  The registration portal will be open March 12-19 and we encourage parents and students to review the course recommendations that have been made and to participate in this process by playing an active role in selecting classes for next school year.

Students who have requested information regarding taking classes at GTCC should stop by their counselor’s office to pick up the packet of information that has been completed.  The next step in the process is to contact Ms. Whitlow at GTCC.  See your counselor for contact information.

Information regarding modified blocks and online classes will be sent out after March 25.  All students must register for 8 classes in Powerschool and counselors will adjust them for modified block, GTCC, virtual classes at a later date
