SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for November 25...

Good evening Southwest!

Two days until Thanksgiving break. Just a heads up that I am allowing students and staff to wear jeans on Tuesday only. Please no holes, rips and let's keep them up around the waist. As we approach Thanksgiving, I hope everyone is as thankful as I am. We have a great community, school, student body, staff and supportive parents and guardian. Please enjoy your Thanksgiving and take a little time to enjoy this break with those you love and care of for. Happy Thanksgiving!

Here Comes the Bus app is about to be launched. This is an app that allows you to track your student's bus.

ACT WorkKeys Test dates coming…..letters are going out in the next few days for those seniors who are CTE Concentrators.  The seniors identified will take the ACT WorkKeys on either Monday, December 2nd and Tuesday December 3rd in the Coggins Gym starting at 8:05 both days.  The student’s letter states which day they will be required to come test.

The SWGHS Band Boosters have opened a Dewey's Bakery Holiday Shop as the band's main fundraiser this year.  They were generously donated a great location in The Palladium Commons (located in between McAlister's Deli and Moe's Southwest Grill).  They will be selling Dewey's baked goods out of this location from now until December 24th.  The shop is volunteer-staffed by band families, and will have students entertain customers with solo and ensemble performances in the shop during the next five Saturdays.  Go out, buy some baked goods, and support the SWGHS band!

Within this communication are the upcoming GAP Company Open House Schedule for the 2019-2020 Year.
Students must attend at least one of these with a parent or guardian, but they are encouraged to attend as many as they can. Each company will present information about their company as well as what positions they are recruiting for this year's GAP cohort. In addition most companies will give tours of their facilities.

Use the Sign up genie within this blog to sign up since they ask that students and parents register on the sign-up genie but if you decide to go last minute, that is fine too.

This is a wonderful opportunity to see all that this program has to offer!

SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for November 11

Good evening Southwest!

Just a friendly reminder that there is no school this coming Monday as we celebrate Veteran's Day. Please assist me in honoring all veterans of the United States Armed Forces. We thank you for your service.

An enormous focus of this week's message is our upcoming Parent Empowerment Summit, right here on the campus of Southwest Guilford High School. This is an amazing opportunity to visit an array of empowering sessions that will help you better navigate as a parent! Lock down Saturday November 16 from 9AM to 12:30.We even have childcare on sight, along with a student aged child friendly kindness mural project during these hours. This event is an opportunity for you to be more empowered while assisting your student with their pathway through High School and beyond.

Please check out the PTSA’s new gift card fundraiser Shop with Script! Go to shopwithscript.com and use the enrollment code found within this blog to purchase gift cards to help raise money for our school while doing your everyday shopping or getting a head start on holiday shopping. Our first order for physical gift cards will go in on November 18, 2019. Please email Casey Wall at casey.wall913@gmail.com with any questions.

A gentle reminder that there are no parent or student drop-off in the back parking lot. The buses are using their STOP signs to keep all students safe; those crossing and those getting off the bus. Passing a bus could result in a serious law enforcement ticket. Please help us be as safe as possible on and around our campus.
GTCC registration for Spring semester classes are now open. They will need to come and see their counselor for more information and to adjust spring schedules early. Here is the link: https://www.gtcc.edu/academics/high-school-programs/career-and-college-promise.php

SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for November 4th...

Good evening Southwest!

I hope this message finds everyone doing well! This is a gentle reminder that you should be turning your clocks back by one hour.

United Way campaign for students is this week!
This is yet another example of how this community can demonstrate how we contribute back. We always lead the county with the amount of donations we contribute to United Way. Our Leadership class and student council will be leading our student drive. At lunch on November 6-8, Student Council Officers will be having a “donation” raffle.  Every $1 donation enters them into a raffle for roughly 1 of 4 prizes. Before and after school on November 6,  Leadership Class members will be distributing flyers in the car line about the console coin dump. Before and after school on November 7 and 8, Leadership Class members will be collecting in the car line. On November 6th and 7th - classroom request (with no incentive).  We are asking every student in 2nd block to bring a quarter or two. Thank you for helping us support United Way!

Seniors! We had a great day of ordering cap and gowns on Wednesday. If you were not able to order your cap and gown, then you must call or go online to Herff Jones to place your order. The longer that you wait, the more that it will cost.
Also, even if you are borrowing a cap and gown from a past graduate in the last few years, you still need to order the new sash ($15), and the 2020 tassel. These are both required for your graduation day dress code.
There will be a mandatory Senior meeting on February 25th from 8:20-9:30. This will also be an early release day for Seniors only!
Also, parents, please know we do not nor will ever have such a thing as a senior skip day. When students start saying there is such a day, we will require medical documentation to support an absence on these days that students spread as such. This past Friday, November 1st, was one of those days.

As a reminder regarding attendance, students who have more than 3 absences excused or unexcused will need to make up time for each absence over three with each individual teacher. If this is not made up by each end of the quarter, the grade is printed as 55/F until time is made up. We will gladly reprint a report card upon request once time is recovered.

Southwest Guilford High School invites you to serve as a judge on our Senior Speech Night, November 19, 2019. The evening begins with dinner at 5:00 pm.
We will begin listening to student speeches at 6:00 in 15 minute increments until 8:00. A judge's scoring rubric will be provided for you.
If you would like to be a volunteer judge, please use the link located within this blog to the form "Be a Volunteer Judge for Senior Speeches"

Students must STILL LOG INTO POWERSCHOOL TO REGISTER IN THE SPRING SEMESTER. Please remember that the classes you register for are the classes we make every effort to get you in. An online copy of the registration book can be found on the link within this blog.  here.
Information about Career & College Promise, GAP, and AP courses will be given to students in a folder that will be brought home.

Graduation Requirements

If your student is interested in earning college credit while in high school, sign up for Career & College Promise at GTCC.  SWHS provides transportation to and from classes at GTCC for classes that begin as early as 9AM and end as late as 2PM.
Dual Enrollment Transfer Classes can be found here and the pathways can be found here. Dual Enrollment Technical Pathway Classes can be found here.  If you are interested in this option, please let your school counselor know (ASAP) so that we can assist you with the process.

Counselors will adjust the course selection after they receive your enrollment information from GTCC.
If you are interested in working on the outdoor dining area, we are looking for volunteers on November 9th, Saturday from 9AM - 1PM behind the cafeteria. We will need pole hole digging tools and shovels to move gravel along with the individuals to use those tools. If you are interested, simply show up. The more individuals present, the quicker this gets finished.

OneCard identification badge wearing started this past week. We are expecting the remainder of the badges next week. Please remind your student to be wearing their badges at all time. If they need a lanyard, please have your student let a teacher know.  If your student does not have their OneCard by Tuesday, please have them contact Mr. Miller.
As a reminder, students will use the OneCards to
  1. Swipe into school
  2. Purchase Cafeteria Meals
  3. Checkout materials in the Media Center.
Swiping starts at 7:40. Students should not bypass the machines until an adult on duty allows them to pass.

It's back! The SWGHS Parent Empowerment Summit. An amazing opportunity to visit an array of sessions that will help you better navigate as a parent! Lock down Saturday November 16 from 9AM to 12:30.This is an opportunity for you to be more empowered in assisting your student with their pathway through High School and beyond.
