SWHS Principal's Weekly Updates for October 30, 2017

Good evening, this is Mike Hettenbach, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School with your weekly updates and reminders...

What a great athletic season we have had so far! Women's volleyball, Men's and Women's cross country, Women's golf, Cheerleaders, Men's soccer and Football have led the year with very successful seasons. Great to job to everyone!

Parents, as Halloween approaches us on Tuesday, please do not send your child in costume. Students must be in regular dress attire on this day. Thank you for assisting us with this expectation.

The end of grading period was this past Friday, October 27th. Report cards will be distributed to all students one week from Wednesday on November 8th.

Registration for rising 11th and 12th graders begins next week.  Students will meet with their counselors individually via English classes to discuss their options based on their post high school plans.  This is the perfect time to start having conversations about life after high school as planning for that life begins now.  If your child is not enrolled in English this semester, they will meet with their counselor next semester.

There will be a Senior Meeting on Wednesday, November 1st. Students will NOT have an early release on this date. Seniors will go over graduation supplies with a representative from Herff Jones. Please be prepared to collect this information from your child. Another senior meeting will take place on November 8th. On this date, seniors will place their graduation supply orders. As seniors will be allowed to go home early on November 8th, seniors should take advantage of this day by filling out applications, resumes, working on essays and even going to visit a college.  You can register to take an official college tour by going to a college or university’s admissions website.

Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors: The Guilford Apprenticeship Partners will have an information session at school on Wednesday, November 15th .  The GAP program offers a path to attaining a college education for free while also obtaining paid on the job training.  See Michelle Cook, cookm@gcsnc.com for more information or to sign up.

All sophomores will take the pre-ACT on Wednesday, November 8th.

SWHS Principal's weekly updates for October 9, 2017

Good evening, this is Mike Hettenbach, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School.

Thank you to all of you and all of our friends and supporters in and around the entire community of Southwest Guilford High School as we moved through a very tough week losing one of our students, 11th grader, Dez Woods. There is a Gofundme page located on the SWHS facebook site for anyone who has been expressing their desire to assist the Woods family with financial assistance. This is being processed through the SWHS Athletic Boosters. Everyone demonstrated what Southwest is about with the level of love and support day in and day out and we appreciate it. Thank you.

Parents, tomorrow, the 2nd interim reports will be distributed to all students in all classes. Please make sure you ask about these reports when your child comes home from school on Monday.

11th and 12th graders, this is a reminder... if your child is planning on taking classes at GTCC in the Spring there is an information session on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 6:00pm on the Jamestown campus, Sears Applied Technology, Building Room 120.

Students can show up at the Medlin Campus Center Lobby on the 2nd floor at one of the times just listed. To assist you, we will allow seniors to be released early after a senior meeting on Wednesday if they are taking advantage of these tours, other college tours, applications, resumes, and even investigating job opportunities. Please encourage your child to take advantage of these opportunities.

All Sophomores and Juniors will be taking the PSAT this year. The date is scheduled for Wednesday, October 11th.The PSAT is a college readiness test that has several benefits for High School students. As our school will be testing 817 students on October 11th, there will be a limited number of calculators available. We are asking that all students who are able to, please bring their own calculators for testing. A list of approved calculators is now located on the school's website. Additional information has been shared with 10th and 11th graders during homeroom on October 5th.

The men's Booster club will have a bake sale and t-shirt sale Monday before school and after school for breast cancer awareness. All proceeds will go to Earlier.org. Please assist the Soccer team in making this fundraiser a success.
