SWGHS Principal's weekly updates and reminders for Sept 30

Southwest High School!

I hope this message finds you all well! Believe it or not, we are heading into week 6 with another round of interim reports going to all homes on Thursday so please be on the lookout for these grade reports. If you have any questions or concerns regarding anything on these interim reports, please reach out to your child's teachers.

If your child is thinking about college, please make plans to attend GCS College Night, on Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. Over 100 two- and four-year colleges and universities, trade and military programs will be represented, and parents can also learn about financial aid options during special presentations at 5:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Greensboro, this event and parking are free, and it only happens once a year, so don’t miss it! Students in grades 10-12 can register to win a $500 scholarship. Please help our community by bringing a canned or dry food item for Backpack Beginnings. For more information, contact your student's counselor.
Any seniors who missed the retakes for the senior pictures can contact Lifetouch the following e-mail address wcarter@lifetouch.com
OneCard identification badge wearing will be starting soon. Now that we have most pictures taken, we will have an Access411 representative on site to snap and print on the spot until ALL students have a card and a lanyard. Also - if any student needs a lanyard, we have plenty. If students want to wear their own special lanyard, that is acceptable as well. We will keep everyone in the loop as to when we start this process. Please remember this card works in both the media center as well as the cafeteria. Soon, we will be using it with all of our buses.
If there are any Sophomores or Juniors who missed the mandatory PSAT preadministration activity, they will have the opportunity to make it up at 11:30 on Tuesday, October 1, in the media center.  Students should bring a number 2 wooden pencil.  Mrs. Barnum is the contact for this mandatory make up session. The PSAT is October 16th and is taken by sophomores and juniors. Juniors and sophomores can begin to study for the PSAT by going to www.collegeboard.org for study skills.

This coming Tuesday is the SWGHS talent show from 6-7 in the auditorium. Come on out and see Southwest's best!

On Monday, October 14th, from 10-11, the Guilford Apprenticeship Partners will visit Southwest to give a presentation to interested students.  Students who have signed up will be dismissed from their 2nd block class to come hear the presentation and get a chance to ask questions of these local companies.

GAP provides an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors, who pass academic and behavioral screening, to further their education while obtaining paid work experience. Upon completion of the GAP program, students are able to receive their associates degree and a journeyman’s certificate, graduate without debt, and have a well-paying job.

Of the 77 apprentices from GCS that were signed this past August,  11 of them were from Southwest! So come out and hear what exciting opportunities this program has for you!  Students can sign up to attend the information session by speaking to our Career Development Coordinator, Michelle Cook or their counselor.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid Day! FASFA opens up Oct. 1 so start to begin the application with parents (https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa), go to www.cfnc.org for one stop shop for scholarships searches, apply for college, study for tests, sending transcripts, and much more.

Vote now until October 15 at https://www.panthers.com/fans/wearitlikeapro Please don't forget about this contest. You can vote as many times as you would like.

The counseling department will hold an informational session on Tuesday Oct. 8 at  5:30pm in the auditorium with information and updates on college application deadlines, Scholarships, FAFSA information, the Say Yes program, and more.  Plan to spend an hour or so with us so that you can help your seniors stay on track for their senior year.

SWGHS Principal's weekly updates and reminders for September 23

Hello Southwest High School!

To start off with this week's message, please make sure you review all dates with special events coming up. I do not want anyone to miss out on any opportunities the school is providing.
This past Thursday evening, I had a chance to celebrate Odetta Bassett, CTE teacher for being recognized as the GCS ACT Teacher of the year award at the GCS Celebration of Excellence at Grimsley High School. Southwest High was also recognized for the outstanding graduation results and being named in US News Best High Schools. Thank you for all your support!

Next week is Start with Hello Week! Start with Hello is a prevention program that teaches children and teens how to be more socially inclusive and connected to each other. Start With Hello asks students, educators, parents and other community leaders who interact with children to take steps in class, the lunchroom and/or other times in their day to be inclusive and connected. In every school and in every community, there are young people who suffer silently because they feel left out, alone or invisible. Social isolation is a growing epidemic in the United States and within our schools. In fact, one study reports that chronic loneliness increases our risk of an early death by 14%. Furthermore, young people who are isolated can become victims of bullying, violence, and/or depression. As a result, many pull further away from society, struggle with learning and social development and/or choose to hurt themselves or others. The Start with Hello program raises awareness and educates students and the community through trainings, advertising, discussion, activities, public proclamations, media events, contests and awards. Please reach out to Stephanie Powell if you would like to assist.

On Monday, October 14th, from 10-11, the Guilford Apprenticeship Partners will visit Southwest to give a presentation to interested students.  Students who have signed up will be dismissed from their 2nd block class to come hear the presentation and get a chance to ask questions of these local companies.

So come out and hear what exciting opportunities this program has for you!  Students can sign up to attend the information session by speaking to our Career Development Coordinator, Michelle Cook or their counselor.

A gentle remidner as we move into week 5, please make sure you are monitoring grades and attendance, including tardies. Any of our student drivers who show 3 or more tardies will lose parking privileges for a short while, so please help us reinforce the importance of being on time.
