SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for March 2nd...

Hello Southwest!

We are coming off a very busy week!   I want to personally congratulate our men's and women's basketball teams as well as our wrestling team for a great season. You all represented us extremely well and we are proud of you.

This coming week is Social Worker's Appreciation week. Please help me in thanking Michelle Phillips!  There are so many behind the scene items that Mrs. Phillips does to assist our students, staff and community on a daily basis. We are lucky to have the best Social Worker around!!!

A reminder to check out the tasks that seniors need to start completing. It can be found within this blog. Please remember to let your counselors know if you have received any scholarships so you can be recognized at the senior awards presentation.

It’s Registration Time!  Students are now meeting with their school counselor between February 24th through April 17th  to review their course requests and prepare for next school year.  We thank you for partnering with us as we strive for academic excellence for your child.  If you have questions or concerns regarding registration, please contact your student's counselor.

The registration book for the 2020-2021 school year is now available and a link for the book can be found within this blog:

As it relates to courses, we are exploring interest for sign language classes. Sign language counts for foreign language credits. If we can express enough interest from students, we may be able to add this to our matrix next year. If your student is interested, please have them contact their counselor immediately.

A reminder that the State Employees Credit Union Scholarship must be submitted to Mrs. Hudgens no later than this Monday, February 24th. Criteria can be found within this blog or from your counselor.

SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for February 10

Good evening Southwest!

A big shout out goes to Mr. Byrd, Ms. Gillis and Ms. Steely for a great job with this year's swim team! THREE Medal winners, THREE school records broken, and a 9th place overall in the states!  Way to go swim team! Additionally, while that means so much to me, a video catching positivity means evens me more to me. SWGHS, led by Will Watson, started a chant that brought members from ALL teams together, exclaiming that everyone is a winner. While the video only captures the end result, it sure looks like everyone in that picture is on the same "team". So, so proud! This right here is a testament of what this community and this school is producing. This quick video can be found online later tonight.

The boys finished 9th overall out of 35.

Boys 200 Freestyle Relay - Kyle Kwon, Jeff Jones, Johnny Edward, and Will Watson - 3rd Place
Boys 200 Medley Relay - Kyle Kwon, Johnny Edwards, Will Watson, and Jeff Jones - 9th Place
Girls 200 Freestyle Relay - Rylie Murphy, Avery Higgins, Haley Mann, and Tate Abbott - 12th Place

Individual events
Boys 50 Free - Will Watson - 2nd, Kyle Kwon - 9th, Johnny Edwards - 12th
Boys 100 Butterfly - Will Watson - 2nd, Johnny Edwards - 12th
Boys 100 Free - Kyle Kwon - 10th

Girls 50 Free - Tate Abbott - 8th

Girls 100 Fly - Tate Abbott - 15th

1m Springboard - Jeff Jones - 16th

All juniors need to report to their Southwest High School homeroom at 8:10 next Thursday, February 13 to complete the ACT pre-test portion of the ACT assessment that will be given on February 25.  Students are not allowed to take the ACT if they have not completed this portion of the ACT answer sheet prior to test day. Any student who is unable to complete this pre-test activity during the first block homeroom this Thursday should contact Mrs. Barnum directly. GTCC students who have a class at this time, as well as AM Weaver students should inform their teachers of this expectations along with their necessary presence on the following Tuesday's ACT exam day. All other grade levels are not excused from missing their GTCC or AM Weaver classes on these days.

We will be distributing all interim reports for all classes this Tuesday. Please make sure you ask your student for this. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your student's teachers. Last, please make sure you are monitoring Parent Assist so you can stay on top of your student's absences and grades.

If you are position to assist the PTSA with the staff soup luncheon this Friday, whether it be providing a crock pot of soup, or being in attendance to serve the lunch, please reach out to the PTSA through their e-mail address; southwestghsptsa@gmail.com

The Spring Athletics Fair Play Meeting has been rescheduled to tomorrow night at 6PM starting in the auditorium. Please make sure you have two proofs of residency, a current physical and pay the athletics fee in the front office.
