SWHS Principal's weekly updates for April 1

Good evening Southwest community!

The deadline for GTCC applications is fast approaching. Students should see their counselors for information regarding documents and make an appointment with Ms. Whitlow to register for classes. Applications are in the counseling office.

To the Class of 2020.  The College Board Opportunity Scholarships are a series of monthly drawing scholarships from $500 to $40,000 dollars for your graduation class.  Attached is a flyer with an embedded video and link for you to interact with and start earning entries for these national scholarships.  All students are eligible for these scholarships based only on completing from one to all six of the action steps that lead to college admissions.   Drawings have already begun so the sooner you complete these two steps, the sooner your entries will be added to the next drawing.

The first two steps are really easy.  They are to open a College Board Account and then register for the scholarship challenge via cb.org/opportunity

If you need assistance with these steps, please stop by your School Counselor’s office and they will help you.

We have a special program on March 26th, Tuesday, called VIP for a VIP.  The VIP for a VIP program will consist of a one hour presentation in the auditorium in the AM for all seniors and possibly juniors providing testimony and statistics directly related to teenage fatalities. In the afternoon, all juniors and seniors will assemble outside for a demonstration of a fatal car crash.
This program is dedicated to the students that have lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents while attending Southwest Guilford High School since it opened.  We sincerely believe that through an on-going teenage driver education program and strong parental support, teenage traffic fatalities can be eliminated in our community. We consider the students at Southwest Guilford High School VIP's. If any parent wishes for their child not to participate, please send a note in to the school directed to me.
Spring Blood Drive is this Tuesday, March 26 9 am- 2 pm. Students must have an appointment. Staff and family members that want to donate can walk in anytime before 1 pm to donate. Please email Mrs. Dusek with any questions.
A friendly reminder that this Friday is a Mandatory Workday for our staff. There is no school for our students on this day. Also, this Thursday is the end of the 3rd quarter. Please continue to check PowerSchool to monitor your child's grades and attendance. Last, feel free to reach out to the teachers when needed.

SWHS Principal's Weekly Updates and Reminders for March 18th...

Good evening Southwest community!

Students have received registration books this past Tuesday morning via their first block class.  Students can use this resource to review course descriptions while they navigate through the course selection process on Powerschool.  Instructions regarding class registration were sent out via email and remind text messaging by your student’s counselor.  The registration portal will be open March 12-19 and we encourage parents and students to review the course recommendations that have been made and to participate in this process by playing an active role in selecting classes for next school year.

Students who have requested information regarding taking classes at GTCC should stop by their counselor’s office to pick up the packet of information that has been completed.  The next step in the process is to contact Ms. Whitlow at GTCC.  See your counselor for contact information.

Information regarding modified blocks and online classes will be sent out after March 25.  All students must register for 8 classes in Powerschool and counselors will adjust them for modified block, GTCC, virtual classes at a later date
