SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for October 7

Hello Southwest Guilford High School!

I hope this message finds everyone doing well!  This week, Wednesday is a Teacher Workday. This means no school for our students. Please take this time to catch up on any work missing if you need to. This past week, we distributed Interim Reports on Thursdays. Please check with your student on these reports. As a reminder, you can always check PowerSchool for grades and attendance. Never hesitate to contact your student's teachers if you have any questions or concerns.

We have a great parent session right here on SWGHS' campus regarding info on college application deadlines, Scholarships, FAFSA information, the Say Yes program, and more.  This will be shared by our counselors at 5:30 PM this Tuesday evening in the auditorium.

If you are in need of an application for free and reduced breakfast and lunch for your student, please contact the cafeteria manager, Sandy Smith, immediately since all students not receiving free and reduced lunch yet will have to pay full price starting October 10th if they don’t have an application on file.

Tutorial bus transportation for Tuesdays and Thursdays start ONE WEEK from Tuesday. (Tuesday, October 15).  Tutorials on these days will run from 3:30 to 4:30.Students MUST be on time for teacher tutorials in order to receive a tutorial bus pass on those days. Please contact your student's teachers to see if they will be providing tutorials on these days or on days in which we do not have after school transportation.
A reminder that is there are any seniors who missed the retakes for the senior pictures, you or your student can contact Lifetouch at the following e-mail address wcarter@lifetouch.com
OneCard identification badge wearing will be starting soon. Now that we have most pictures taken, we will have an Access411 representative on site to snap and print on the spot until ALL students have a card and a lanyard. This should happen over the next two weeks but we will keep you updated once we get this date.
The PSAT is October 16th and is taken by sophomores and juniors. Juniors and sophomores can begin to study for the PSAT by going to www.collegeboard.org for study skills.

On Monday, October 14th, from 10-11, the Guilford Apprenticeship Partners will visit Southwest to give a presentation to interested students.  Students who have signed up will be dismissed from their 2nd block class to come hear the presentation and get a chance to ask questions of these local companies.

GAP provides an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors, who pass academic and behavioral screening, to further their education while obtaining paid work experience. Upon completion of the GAP program, students are able to receive their associates degree and a journeyman’s certificate, graduate without debt, and have a well-paying job.

Of the 77 apprentices from GCS that were signed this past August,  11 of them were from Southwest! So come out and hear what exciting opportunities this program has for you!  Students can sign up to attend the information session by speaking to our Career Development Coordinator, Michelle Cook or their counselor.
