SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for Oct 21st

Hello Southwest Guilford High School!

I hope this message finds everyone doing well!

This coming week is Homecoming week which means it is a very exciting and a very busy week with many items on the calendar. Please make sure you review this message entirely so your student is in the loop.

October 21st - October 25th is CFNC NC College Application Week and the counseling team at SW is working hard to ensure ALL seniors take advantage and have access to this opportunity.
Even if your student is not college bound, please send them to their counselor for a conversation.

In addition,
Seniors will have the opportunity to receive assistance for college applications Monday Oct. 21-Oct. 23rd in the Media Center. A link was sent out to students to sign up. Although the counseling team has sent a link, they will not turn away students that need help.

This coming Friday is the end of the first quarter. Please make sure your student has made up any owed time in order to get credit for their grade for the first quarter.  Any student who has NOT completed their make up time will receive a 55/F as their grade until they have made up time. Remember to use Parent Assist to monitor your student's grades and attendance. If you have trouble accessing Parent Assist, please contact our Data manager, Mrs. Kristy Cline.

After school tutorial buses started this past Tuesday and will be available EVERY Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 unless otherwise communicated. Students who are needing tutorial transportation must be in their tutoring location no later than 3:30 and must stay until 4:30. If students do not follow those expectations they will not be allowed a ride on the tutorial buses at 4:30. Please check with your students' teachers if they will conduct tutorials on these days. Also, as it relates to after school, no students should be hanging around campus. Students must be involved in a tutorial, club or sport. Please make sure you are picking up your student after school no later than 3:30, or immediately after their tutorial, club meeting or sport.  We do not have supervision after school and this is a safety issue. Thank you for assisting us with this expectation.

OneCard identification badge wearing will be starting this coming week. Mr. Miller has informed our staff that students need to start wearing their badges/lanyards. Students can have any lanyard they would like, and if they need one, to let one of their teachers know.
This coming week, while we will all start telling students to wear their cards. they will be required to have them displayed during the instructional day. On Thursday and Friday of this coming week, the swiping machines will be in full effect. Thank you for reminding your student to start wearing their identification badge
Free Application for Federal Student Aid Day! FASFA opened up Oct. 1, so, to begin the application process, go to the link (https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa) Also, go to www.cfnc.org for one stop shop for scholarships searches, apply for college, study for tests, sending transcripts, and much more.

It's back! The SWGHS Parent Empowerment Summit. An amazing opportunity to visit an array of sessions that will help you better navigate as a parent! Lock it down in your calendar and we will see you then!

SWGHS Principal's Weekly Updates for October 14th...

Hello Southwest Guilford High School!

I hope this message finds everyone doing well!

At Southwest, we are committed to providing a high-quality learning experience for all students. To support this commitment, we are continuing our partnership partnering with Equal Opportunity Schools to enhance the learning culture within our high schools and to develop strategies to increase student participation in challenging coursework.

Students will begin taking an Equal Opportunity Schools Survey the week of October 14th through their 2nd Block class and some CTE classes. The survey  will ask their views on their coursework, school experience, and ways in which our school can support their life goals. Results will be used to identify students who are interested in and prepared to take more challenging coursework.

We are excited to continue this path to better prepare all students to succeed in reaching their goals.
After school tutorial buses start this Tuesday and will be available every Tuesday and Thursday immediately tutorial.

OneCard identification badge wearing will be starting soon. Now that we have most pictures taken, we will have an Access411 representative on site to snap and print on the spot until ALL students have a card and a lanyard. This should happen over the next two weeks but we will keep you updated once we get this date.
The PSAT is this Wednesday, October 16th and is taken by sophomores and juniors. Juniors and sophomores can study for the PSAT by going to www.collegeboard.org for study skills. Seniors will have a senior meeting at the beginning of the day and will have an early release immediately thereafter to work on college applications, essays and even visit job opportunities. All students must report to their homeroom at the beginning of the day.

This Monday, October 14th, from 10-11, the Guilford Apprenticeship Partners will visit Southwest to give a presentation to interested students.  Students who have signed up will be dismissed from their 2nd block class to come hear the presentation and get a chance to ask questions of these local companies.
