SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for November 11

Good evening Southwest!

Just a friendly reminder that there is no school this coming Monday as we celebrate Veteran's Day. Please assist me in honoring all veterans of the United States Armed Forces. We thank you for your service.

An enormous focus of this week's message is our upcoming Parent Empowerment Summit, right here on the campus of Southwest Guilford High School. This is an amazing opportunity to visit an array of empowering sessions that will help you better navigate as a parent! Lock down Saturday November 16 from 9AM to 12:30.We even have childcare on sight, along with a student aged child friendly kindness mural project during these hours. This event is an opportunity for you to be more empowered while assisting your student with their pathway through High School and beyond.

Please check out the PTSA’s new gift card fundraiser Shop with Script! Go to shopwithscript.com and use the enrollment code found within this blog to purchase gift cards to help raise money for our school while doing your everyday shopping or getting a head start on holiday shopping. Our first order for physical gift cards will go in on November 18, 2019. Please email Casey Wall at casey.wall913@gmail.com with any questions.

A gentle reminder that there are no parent or student drop-off in the back parking lot. The buses are using their STOP signs to keep all students safe; those crossing and those getting off the bus. Passing a bus could result in a serious law enforcement ticket. Please help us be as safe as possible on and around our campus.
GTCC registration for Spring semester classes are now open. They will need to come and see their counselor for more information and to adjust spring schedules early. Here is the link: https://www.gtcc.edu/academics/high-school-programs/career-and-college-promise.php
Another Guilford Apprenticeship Partners event is coming up that will help coach you through the next steps in this process if your student has expressed interest in this program. It is Monday, November 18th from 6:00PM to 8:00 PM at the GTCC Cameron Campus.

Fall Athletic Awards Ceremony Monday, Nov. 25, 6:30. Coach Christman will be distributing more information through coaches over the next week.
Please think about serving as a judge on our Senior Speech Night, November 19, 2019. The evening begins with dinner at 5:00 pm.
We will begin listening to student speeches at 6:00 in 15 minute increments until 8:00. A judge's scoring rubric will be provided for you.
If you would like to be a volunteer judge, please use the link located within this blog to the form "Be a Volunteer Judge for Senior Speeches"

SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for November 4th...

Good evening Southwest!

I hope this message finds everyone doing well! This is a gentle reminder that you should be turning your clocks back by one hour.

United Way campaign for students is this week!
This is yet another example of how this community can demonstrate how we contribute back. We always lead the county with the amount of donations we contribute to United Way. Our Leadership class and student council will be leading our student drive. At lunch on November 6-8, Student Council Officers will be having a “donation” raffle.  Every $1 donation enters them into a raffle for roughly 1 of 4 prizes. Before and after school on November 6,  Leadership Class members will be distributing flyers in the car line about the console coin dump. Before and after school on November 7 and 8, Leadership Class members will be collecting in the car line. On November 6th and 7th - classroom request (with no incentive).  We are asking every student in 2nd block to bring a quarter or two. Thank you for helping us support United Way!

Seniors! We had a great day of ordering cap and gowns on Wednesday. If you were not able to order your cap and gown, then you must call or go online to Herff Jones to place your order. The longer that you wait, the more that it will cost.
Also, even if you are borrowing a cap and gown from a past graduate in the last few years, you still need to order the new sash ($15), and the 2020 tassel. These are both required for your graduation day dress code.
There will be a mandatory Senior meeting on February 25th from 8:20-9:30. This will also be an early release day for Seniors only!
Also, parents, please know we do not nor will ever have such a thing as a senior skip day. When students start saying there is such a day, we will require medical documentation to support an absence on these days that students spread as such. This past Friday, November 1st, was one of those days.

As a reminder regarding attendance, students who have more than 3 absences excused or unexcused will need to make up time for each absence over three with each individual teacher. If this is not made up by each end of the quarter, the grade is printed as 55/F until time is made up. We will gladly reprint a report card upon request once time is recovered.

Southwest Guilford High School invites you to serve as a judge on our Senior Speech Night, November 19, 2019.

SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for Oct 29

Hello Southwest Guilford High School!

I hope this message finds everyone doing well! What a great week we just had. The school was decorated unbelievable for homecoming week, truly the best I have seen in the past 11 years. I am so proud of the students and adults who participated in making Homecoming a great wee and how the students responded in such a typical respectful Southwest manner. This is yet another one of the many reasons why I am such a proud principal.

A gentle reminder that this Monday is a Teacher workday so there is no school for students. We look forward to seeing everyone back on campus on Tuesday!

Wednesday is the Pre-Act for Sophomores. This is approximately a 4 hour session so please make sure your student has slept well and had a nutritious breakfast. Students, if at all possible, should bring a graphing or scientific calculator with them.

Seniors will be placing their graduation supply orders this Wednesday during set time. Once all seniors have had this opportunity, they will be allowed the option to have lunch and then dismissed thereafter.

This Thursday is Halloween. Please know that at Southwest Guilford High School we do not allow costumes or accessories of any kind on this day. Additionally, we ask all families to make sure students are not bringing in any candy they have accumulated during this time. Please keep the candy at home.

Teachers will email Mr. Miller for missing cards, and teachers can also pick up extra Lanyards in the main office workroom.

Students will use the OneCards to
  1. Swipe into school
  2. Purchase Cafeteria Meals
