Southwest Guilford High School Principal's Message for the Week of December 19, 2016

Good evening, this is Wayne Duggins, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School.

I have just a few quick items to share with you.

Parents and students, we only have 3 days until the winter break and then just 10 short days to finish out this semester when we return. Please contact our teachers with any questions regarding your progress so you can make up any missed assignments over the break. Don't let this semester get away from you.

This Thursday (12/22) and Friday (12/23) there is no school for students. The winter break this year runs from 12/22/16 thru 1/3/17.

I have had a lot of questions regarding the absence that many students took on Thursday (12/15) due to the school rumor. We still had a regular school day and any and all assignments missed will still need to be made up. This day will also not be excused or waived for exemption. We take safety very seriously and would never intentionally put students in harms way. I appreciate your understanding.

All sporting events this week are away.

Don't forget that over the holiday, Southwest High School will host the Annual Sheetz Holiday Christmas Classic. Play begins on December 27th. So please go to the Southwest Athletic Twitter or Facebook to get all your game times and bracket information.

I will not put out another message until the start of the new year. So if I do not see you at any of the games, I hope you have great holiday.

Remember, you are always able to access this message on our school website under School News and titled Principal's Weekly Updates or on Facebook and Twitter. Southwest Guilford High School Principal's Message for the Week of September 5, 2016

Good evening, this is Wayne Duggins, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School.

I have just a few quick items to share with you.

This first week back was hot and I am sure a little tiring for some. I have been very impressed with this staff and the behavior of our students so far. Keep up the great work!

Tomorrow, Monday, September 5th, is the Labor Day Holiday. There will be no school for students and staff.  I hope you are able to spend quality time with friends and family.

Tuesday, September 6th, we will host our annual open house for all grades from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. We will begin with a brief meeting in the auditorium before we ring the bells and allow you to walk your child's schedule. I hope to see you all there.

We have a lot of home sporting events this week:
Tuesday 9/6 - Men's Soccer vs Western Guilford
Tuesday 9/6 - Women's Tennis vs Glenn
Wednesday 9/7 - Women's Golf vs Page
Wednesday 9/7 - Women's Volleyball vs Eastern Guilford
Thursday 9/8 - Women's Golf vs Grimsley
Thursday 9/8 - JV Football vs Western Guilford
Friday 9/9 - Varsity Football @ Western Guilford

Parents, I know that many of you have signed a schedule change form for your child to come out of certain classes. The schedule change form is for students that had a hole in their schedule or did not get what the registered for during the spring of last year. We are not going to change classes for lunch preferences, to be with friends, or make changes that further overload our already crowded courses. I appreciate your understanding as we continue to balance our school schedule.

Also, starting Tuesday, Sept 6th, students will be able to bring water to their classes to drink. We are not, however, going to allow any other types of drinks or food to be consumed in the classrooms. This is in an effort to help our students stay hydrated throughout the school day.

Let the new school year begin! I hope you are as excited as we are to get this year underway.

Tomorrow, Monday, August 29th, all students will report to their homerooms to get their schedules. We appreciate your patience as we have tried to work out as many conflicts as possible. We will continue to balance throughout the week which may require us to move some students as there will still be some adjustments that must be made.

This week, all students can wear Southwest Spirit shirts. You must still comply with dress code for you shorts and pants. Let's show our "Cowboy Pride" this week!

We have a lot of home sporting events this week:

Southwest Guilford High School Principal's Message for the Week of August 22, 2016

Good evening, this is Wayne Duggins, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School.

I have just a few quick items to share with you.

One more week and we will be back in school. It is going to be a great year, so start getting excited about coming back on the August 29th.

Tomorrow, Monday, August 22nd, we will have our annual freshmen orientation. Mr. Hettenbach wants me to remind you that all 9th graders are expected to attend the orientation from 8:30am to 12:30pm. Students should have a healthy breakfast before coming. Dress code is not being required for this day. Parent orientation starts at 6:30pm and ends at 8:00pm. Student schedules for 9th graders only will be distributed after the parent orientation.  9th grade class of 2020 shirts will be on sale right after student orientation as well as before and after parent orientation for $12.00 a piece. We hope to see you there.

Also tomorrow, Monday, August 22nd, all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade schedules will be mailed home. We are still working this week on fixing scheduling issues in an effort to make them as accurate as possible.

We have a lot of home sporting events this week:
Monday 8/22 - Men's Soccer vs Northern Guilford
Tuesday 8/23 - Women's Tennis vs Grimsley
Wednesday 8/24 - Women's Tennis vs Southeast Guilford
Wednesday 8/24 - Women's Volleyball vs Andrews
Friday 8/26 - Varsity Football vs Andrews

I have a quick message just for our students. We are aware that Ragsdale is our rival and that at times they have done some vandalism to our school. Apparently, someone has gone to Ragsdale this past week and defaced some of their property. I say it is us because of the green SWs painted all over the place. I do not have a problem with school spirit where we paint a rivals spirit rock or perhaps roll their school. I do have a problem with destruction of property. We are better than that and my expectation is that we rise above. Please refrain from going to other schools and vandalizing their campus. I do not want to use school funds to pay for items at other schools. I appreciate your help with this.

Remember, you will also be able to access this message on the school website under School News and titled Weekly Updates or on Facebook and Twitter. Please follow Southwest High School at SouthwestGHS for both Twitter and Facebook. This is a great way for us to communicate and stay connected.

I hope you have a great week.

I have just a few quick items to share with you.

Only two more weeks and we will be kicking off the 2016-2017 school year. I hope you are excited for another great year at the "Ranch".

This Saturday, August 20th at 12pm, the Carl Chavis YMCA is hosting their Back to School Bash. You will be able to meet and greet your local principals, have some light refreshments, and also enjoy some live entertainment. They have a new splash park and will be giving away backpacks stuffed with school supplies. Registration is required and tickets may be picked up at the "Y". Proof of High Point residency and a report card are required to receive a ticket. We hope to see you there.

On Monday, August 22nd, we will have our annual freshmen orientation. Mr. Hettenbach wants me to remind you that all 9th graders are expected to attend the orientation from 8:30am to 12:30pm. Parents can attend the orientation that evening from 6:30 to 8:00pm. Schedules will be handed out to parents AFTER parent orientation ends. Any parent that does not pick up their child's schedule will have it mailed immediately the next day.

On Monday, August 22nd, all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade schedules will be mailed home. We are still working this week on fixing scheduling issues in an effort to make them as accurate as possible.

I know that many of you are wondering whether our dress code or cell phone policies are going to change. At this time, we will not be changing any of our procedures or expectations. Our Leadership Team will be looking at all of our policies as the year progresses to make sure that we are consistent.

I hope you have a great week and are ready to start back on August 29th
