SWGHS Principal's weekly updates for November 23

Good evening Southwest!

I hope this message finds everyone doing well!

As we approach Thanksgiving, I personally want to thank the SW staff, students and the community for maintaining positivity as best possible and doing the best we can under the conditions we are under. Please take the upcoming break to relax and reflect upon any positive things going on in our lives, that others may not be as fortunate. Happy Thanksgiving SW!

Thank you to everyone who contributed towards turkey dinners to our community members in need for this upcoming holiday! Our School Social Worker, Ms. Wright, was able to purchase 15+ complete turkey dinners!  Football players will be taking a part in this distribution.  What a great way to utilize our students to play a role in giving back to the community!

Underclassman picture day is Friday, December 4, in the freshman gym. Students will be photographed following a specific schedule to prevent students from gathering in large crowds. Schedule forthcoming. Health and safety protocols will be in place and must be followed or else those who can not follow these expectations will be required to leave the campus.

Seniors who have not taken their senior photo can do so on December 1, 2, or 3. Senior photos will be taken at the Lifetouch studio at 1210-C Bridford Parkway (the old Pier 1 building next to the Target). Seniors will sign up for an appointment time. Sign up sheet forthcoming. Due to Covid, seniors will only be able to take formal poses (tuxedo/drape pictures). No environmental/outdoor photos possible this year.

Any students who may be interested in enrolling into a Social Justice class next semester must contact their counselor immediately.

Intro to Racial Equity and Social Justice explores the foundations of big concepts like power, identity, and authority that play various roles in our daily lives. In addition to examining the present, we’ll look into the past to deepen our understanding of how we came be here, in this place; this now, where racial equity is again centered in our national conversations. In doing so, we’ll discover some ways that we might individually and collectively make a difference in the pursuit of social justice while also recognizing that learning truly is power.

Are any students wanting to represent Southwest on the Superintendent's Advisory Council? If so, please apply within the link below.

Application: https://bit.ly/3eUv2pd

A positive shout out to the families who attended the Volleyball matches this past week and followed the health and safety expectations. It was our first indoor match of the school year and they all made our job easy and less stressful... thank you.

Please click here if you need guidance in setting up a Parent Portal account. If you have any difficultly with this process, please e-mail Mrs. Kristy Cline at clinek2@gcsnc.com. If you have any questions regarding grades or attendance, please do not hesitate to reach out to your student's teachers via their e-mail address that can be found on the school's website.

This video has been used district wide to provide information regarding pairing student and parent accounts in Canvas so parents can access what is due, what has been submitted, graded, etc. You’ll see in the video that one of the key pieces is a pairing code that can only originate from the student account holder.

Senior families how have yet to order or pick up their graduation supplies, please reach out to Herff Jones through their online portal

SWGHS Principal's Weekly Updates for November 16

Good evening Southwest!

I hope this message finds everyone doing well!

This past week, the GCS Board of Education decided to have our Adaptive students and Nursing Fundamental students return to campus starting this coming Monday. If you have a student in those areas, your student's teacher should have communicated with you at this time. If not, please reach out to them. Other students returning are still on hold until at least January 20th.  With this pandemic, things can change quickly, so please stay in the know with all GCS and SWGHS communications.

The Guilford Apprenticeship Partners have been holding student information sessions. All meetings are held via Zoom this year. Information sessions began last week and continue through Tuesday, November 17th. Information Sessions include a short 9 minute new GAP recruitment video as well as a Question and Answer by GAP business partners.  GAP is a four year apprenticeship program open to all juniors and seniors who meet the GAP requirements of good attendance and a minimum GPA of 2.5-2.8. All information session dates and times can be found on the Southwest High School Facebook page and the Guilford Apprenticeship Partners website under Events.  The GAP website is gapnc.org.  Please contact Mrs. Cook at cookm@gcsnc.com with questions.

SW families, a gentle reminder that when coming to Southwest for any activity we have in place, everyone must follow our health and safety expectations or else they will be required to leave the campus. Please do not put us in that position. It's a simple request that does not need to be met with resistance.  We want our students back badly and unless we all play a part, we are only delaying that reality. Thank you in advance.
