SWGHS Principal's weekly message for November 2nd

Good evening Southwest!

I hope this message finds everyone doing well!

A gentle reminder to turn your clocks back! And..... No school Tuesday for staff or students. We will return with instruction on Wednesday.

SW families, as we see the metrics creeping upwards in Guilford County, specifically our zip code, I am at the point to beg everyone to do their part. I am certainly not asking everyone to like it, but please make an effort to at least protect everyone else. Just a heads up, that if anyone comes on the SWGHS campus, they must follow the health and safety protocols or else they will be asked to leave the campus. Please do not put us in that position. It's a simple request that does not need to be met with resistance.  We want our students back badly and unless we all play a part, we are only delaying that reality. Thank you in advance.

Report Cards were mailed this past Wednesday, October 28th. Additionally, connect ed messages were sent to all students who failed 2 or more classes for the 1st quarter.

Please click here if you need guidance in setting up a Parent Portal account. If you have any difficultly with this process, please e-mail Mrs. Kristy Cline at clinek2@gcsnc.com. If you have any questions regarding grades or attendance, please do not hesitate to reach out to your student's teachers via their e-mail address that can be found on the school's website.

This video has been used district wide to provide information regarding pairing student and parent accounts in Canvas so parents can access what is due, what has been submitted, graded, etc. You’ll see in the video that one of the key pieces is a pairing code that can only originate from the student account holder.

Senior families how have yet to order or pick up their graduation supplies, please reach out to Herff Jones through their online portal

For the safety of our students & staff:

Any visitors on campus for any reason or anyone needing to check out a student must bring their driver’s license to be scanned each time you come on campus. Thank you for understanding this new expectation moving forward.

As you are aware, GCS is delaying re-entry. I will have more information for you about when we start the 9:55-4:25 bell schedule, along with other pertinent information.  At this moment, Southwest Guilford High School's bell schedule will be from 9:55 to 4:25.  Feel free to use this link to see the process in decision making for re-entry.

Battle of the Books is getting ready to take off! Guilford County Schools has had a wonderful history of engaging high schoolers in reading and community. If you are interested in Southwest’s Battle of the Books club, please email Mrs. Hunt at huntv@gcsnc.com. There will be opportunities through Canvas and Teams for club meetings while maintaining safe procedures.

Seniors, don’t forget that senior superlatives and senior quotes are due no later than Friday, November 6th. Any late quotes and votes will not be accepted! Senior Superlative voting is now open! You can find the link on our Instagram and Facebook page @southwestghsyearbook. Also, seniors don’t forget to send in your senior quotes! Email your quotes to the Yearbook staff at horizons.swghs@gmail.com.

Remember that tasteless and vulgar quotes will not be published! Senior parents, if the school has your email address you should have received an email regarding other senior information. For more information about this school year’s yearbook follow us on Facebook or Instagram @southwestghsyearbook.

If a student says they can not do their work, I have guided teachers to use a flowchart that will allow every student to get their work during this time until all devices arrive... Feel free to review this flowchart. Did you know we are delivering work to homes?  Yes we are, just ask your teacher!

The upcoming Saturday SAT exam has been cancelled and test-takers will be refunded money. The next test is in December.

HOSA has planned to serve the community through various activities that we've been doing the past years.

These events will occur in the Media Center parking lot. Masks, social distancing MUST be utilized.

Oct. 31st - "Trick or Can" students will collect can goods during Halloween in their own neighborhood.  Out of the Garden can pick up collected goods on Monday - Nov. 2nd

We know that wearing a cloth face covering is one of the best tools we have for reducing the spread of COVID-19. I know I speak for our staff, students and community when I say we want our students to return. However, until we all play our part, particularly the 2765 zip code area, in protecting themselves and others, very little will change.  Our zip code is one of two areas in Guilford County that has the highest risk of transmission. Feel free to check out the Guilford County Department of Health Data Dashboard. As competitive as I am comparing our school and community against others, this is something I believe many of you would agree with me that this is not an area we want to be on the forefront of. Thank you in advance in being part of following the health and safety protocols recommended to us.

Southwest family, our Nursing Fundamental students are sponsoring the fall blood drive again this year on Oct. 29 from 8:15-1:30. Due to Covid-19, it will be held at the Covenant Church United Methodist on Skeet Club Rd. Please come out and help us meet our donation goal and invite others to come. All the information for the blood drive is located on our Southwest home page. There is also a parent consent form for students that are 16 yrs. old. Students must be at least 16 yrs. old and weight at least 110 lbs. Donors must bring ID or One Card to the appointment. Appointments can be made online.
