SWHS Principal's weekly updates for April 30

Good evening, this is Mike Hettenbach, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School with your weekly updates and reminders...

Thank you once again for the ongoing contributions all of you have provided to the individuals in need from the tornado damage that occurred in East Greensboro. The over whelming amount of items donated is just another example of the caring community we have. Thank you.

Great job this past Friday with the Southwest Guilford High School PTSA Spring Fling. Thank you to all participants who made this happen. Also, a big thank you to Ms. Cofer and her colleagues who played a big role in making this happen. It is always nice to see so many school groups come together to put on such a wonderful social event!

This Wednesday, Guilford County Schools is holding a Sandy Hook Promise Know the Signs training session for parents. The event runs from 6:00 to 7:30 and will be held in the auditorium. We are only one of two sites in the county to have this session so take advantage of the convenience of this program being in our very own auditorium.

The student yearbook staff asked me to share that there are only a limited number of yearbooks left. The cost is $80.00 each. Cash and checks are accepted and can be brought to Room, D124. Distribution of yearbooks starts on May 25th.

As we enter the month of May, we find ourselves with only 5 full weeks of instruction followed by a week of exams. AP exams start the week of May 7 and end on May 18th. Please make sure your children who may be enrolled in AP classes take advantage of any study session opportunities that their AP teacher is providing.  Reach out to your child's teachers to seek out any of these opportunities as well as for other exams as we near the end of the school year.

Seniors and parents of seniors, please make sure all scholarship/grant awards are turned in to their counselor even if they will not be attending the university that has given them the award.

As it relates to the weekly athletics, please feel free to navigate to the www.cowboysports.org website for detailed information.

SWHS Principal's weekly updates for April 23

Good evening, this is Mike Hettenbach, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School with your weekly updates and reminders...

Thank you for all of your heartfelt contributions you have delivered to our campus this week. We will make sure these items are certainly received by the Erwin, Peeler and Hampton communities, students and their families, as well as staff. As our community faced such a tragic event, it does not surprise me in the least how our community has stepped up and demonstrated such a high level of care for those in need. Please know we will still accept contributions for at least another week. Feel free to bring those items to the main foyer of our school and we will make sure those in charge will get the items delivered.  Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.

This past week, report cards were handed out to students. Please make sure you are aware of your child's grades. Make sure you have access to Parent Assist to monitor your child's attendance and grades. If you do not have access and are unsure of how to sign up, please feel free to contact the school and ask for our data manager, Kristy Cline to assist you. The first interim reports for the 4th quarter will be distributed on Thursday for all students. This means we have just 6 weeks left until the last day of school. With exams scheduled the last 5-8 days of school, we are looking at a little more than 4 weeks of instruction. It is imperative that students are focused on their academics, behavior and any make up time as we will be finished for the year before we know it. Parents, please make sure you take advantage of the ParentAssist program and stay in touch with your child's teachers if questions or concerns are needing to be answered.

This Wednesday is an early release day at 1:35. Students must leave campus at 1:35 on early release days.

This Thursday, we have another PTSA Jean day. Any student who has purchased a wrist band for the 2nd semester can wear jeans on this day. Any student still wishing to purchase a band can do so by seeing Mrs. Repko in the Freshman Academy.

This week, the award winning theater program will be putting on their rendition of Alice in Wonderland Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Show times are 6:30 on both Thursday and Friday and 2:00 on Sunday. The program will be held in the SWHS auditorium.

Parents, as a reminder, student drop off is in front of the school, not by the gym. Also, please make sure if your child drives to the campus, they are aware they must have a parking pass, and if not, their car can be towed. Parking passes can be obtained form Mrs. Barnum, the 11th grade administrator.

Seniors and parents of seniors, please make sure all scholarship/grant awards are turned in to their counselor even if they will not be attending the university that has given them the award. Also, Cap and Gown pictures are Wednesday. Please make sure any seniors who are wanting cap and gown photos are to sign up outside Mrs. Bratton's door and bring money to the photoshoot.

SWHS Principal's weekly updates for April 16

Good evening, this is Mike Hettenbach, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School with your weekly updates and reminders...

If you are still interested in being involved with SWHS, the PTSA is a wonderful opportunity to get involved. This past Monday, we had an amazing meeting with a lot of energy and direction being put towards many areas of the school. If you are still interested in being involved, please do not hesitate to reach out to PTSA president Stephanie Howard at showard@northstate.net.

Senior and parents of seniors, please make sure all scholarship/grant awards are turned in to their counselor even if they will not be attending the university that has given them the award.

As we move into the 4th quarter, it is imperative that students stay on top of their attendance and make up time immediately. While we have a Saturday School coming up on Saturday, April 21st, the last Saturday school at this time is currently scheduled for Saturday, May 26th.

All students that are looking to tryout for the Cheerleading program for the 2018-2019 season need to come to the interest meeting this Wednesday, April 18th from 6-7:30. This meeting will be held in the Coggins Gym where parents and students will be given important information about the season, as well as about tryouts. Parents are highly encouraged to come to the meeting with their student.

This past week, we reviewed active shooter response and drill with the staff. This will be continued as we have more to review. This week, we will be reviewing procedures with students during lunch. We continue to receive great feedback from staff, students and parents which is assisting us in making SWHS a more knowledgeable and well prepared school.

If you are interested in being a judge for Senior Speech night for this Tuesday, April 17th, please reach out to Dawn Davis at davisd9@gcsnc.com. We can certainly use more judges and if you have never done this before, you will certainly enjoy your evening, plus you receive a free meal.

SWHS Principal's weekly updates for April 9th

Good evening, this is Mike Hettenbach, Principal of Southwest Guilford High School with your weekly updates and reminders...

I hope each and every one of you have enjoyed your Spring Break.  We return to school tomorrow, April 9th. This is the first day of the 4th quarter. Please make sure your child is motivated and ready to finish the year as strong as possible. Report cards will be distributed on Tuesday, April 17th. If you do not receive one, please reach out to Sue Durant, our guidance secretary.

The Thursday before break, we conducted an unannounced school wide lock-down drill. I can honestly tell you it was a great job overall and I appreciate your child's patience with this, especially on the day before break. We received some great feedback on some minor changes we need to make, otherwise, we were commended on our overall response to this drill, even more so, because it was unannounced.

This Friday, is another PTSA Chic Fila day. Please go get some breakfast, lunch or dinner fro Chic Fila in the Palladium and tell them you are from Southwest Guilford High School. If you have a child that drives and occasionally stops by Chic Fila, remind them to mention us so a portion of the profit goes right back to our school.

If you are interested in being a judge for Senior Speech night on Tuesday, April 17th, please reach out to Dawn Davis at davisd9@gcsnc.com. We can certainly use more judges and if you have never done this before, you will certainly enjoy your evening, plus you receive a free meal.
